We organize our manuscript collections by either the individual or the organization who created the items.

Our manuscripts collections cover a broad range of subjects. We have many collections focused on items relating to the history of eastern Washington State, especially the Palouse region and the Pacific Northwest.

Manuscript collections contain the following types of materials:

  • unpublished text documents (letters and records)
  • photographs
  • music scores
  • audiovisual media
  • printed ephemera
  • artifacts
  • other items

Some collections are gathered around a particular subject, for example, the Washington Composers Collection.

We’ve acquired these collections since the early 1900s, primarily to support research and teaching at Washington State University.
